Music

The Music Department

Hobart High School has a vibrant and diverse music department. Over 150 of our students play a musical instrument and we have a variety of extracurricular activities to support their learning.  The teaching and learning of music take place through the key elements of listening, performing and composing.


The Music Curriculum

The Music curriculum at Hobart aims to instil a life-long love of music in our students. The curriculum ensures that students develop their skills and understanding within three core strands - performing, composing and listening. At both Key Stage 3 and GCSE a wide range of musical topics are covered including the Western Classical tradition, Film music, Blues and Popular music.

Through Music, the curriculum helps students to develop transferable skills such as team-work, leadership, creative thinking, problem solving and decision making. These skills are vital in enabling students to advance as learners in and beyond the classroom.

The department has an extensive range of keyboards, electric and acoustic guitars and a class set of ukuleles. Performance on these form an integral part of class music lessons. Key Stage 4 students can use music technology to produce a score for their compositions and the department has twelve computers all of which run the note-writing software ‘Sibelius’.


Extra-Curricular Opportunities

Over 70 of our students play a musical instrument and our peripatetic tutors offer instrumental lessons on woodwind, guitar, ukulele, drums, piano and singing. Some teachers contribute in the running of extra-curricular activities which are held during the lunch hour and include a Choir, vocal groups, flute group, function band and Concert Band. Students are able to use the music rooms at lunch time to do independent practice.

A variety of concerts are held throughout the year, notably at Christmas and in the Summer term.

Every year the Music department collaborates with the Drama department to produce a large scale musical theatre performance. In previous years we have performed Grease, We Will Rock You and Oliver. In February 2023, students will perform Matilda Jr.

GCSE Exam Board
We currently follow the Eduqas course in GCSE music which is made up of three components – performing, composing and appraising.

GCSE Controlled Conditions

Controlled assessments contribute 60% towards the final GCSE grade in Music. This involves completing two compositions and two performances. These are carried out during Year 10 and Year 11.


Revision Guides

Students will be provided with revision booklets and knowledge organisers which cover the different topics that make up the GCSE course.
