Teaching & Learning at Hobart

PE

The PE Department

The Physical Education Department in Hobart High School wholeheartedly embraces the “Sport for All” philosophy set down by Head of Department, Mark Stone.  Students are encouraged to take part in all activities to the best of their ability with the fact of enjoyment also being very important. All students are given the opportunity to participate in a wide range of individual and team sports and each student is encouraged to strive for excellence and achieve their full potential.

The School has a full size artificial playing surface, extensive playing fields, hard court areas, well equipped Sports Hall and swimming pool.

The PE Curriculum

Lessons at Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8, 9) involve football, hockey, basketball, netball, table tennis, gymnastics, dance, rounders, athletics, fitness and swimming.  At Key Stage 4 (Year 10 & 11) students participate in several different sports including football, netball, hockey, table tennis, fitness, athletics and rounders.

Physical Education is available at GCSE in Years 10 and 11 and has proven to be a popular examination choice. It’s a rewarding subject for the students who learn the importance of working in a team with a positive ethos.  During the course areas studied include Applied anatomy and physiology, movement analysis, physical training, health, fitness, well-being, sports psychology and socio-cultural differences.

Extra-Curricular Opportunities

We offer an extensive range of extra- curricular activities every lunchtime, which include inter-form competitions and after school clubs and inter-school fixtures in cups, tournaments and block fixtures which cover a number of sports including football, netball, basketball and rounders.  Physical Education plays an important role in links with the community through working with the School Games programme and plays a vital part in the educational, recreational and cultural aspects of school life.

The Go Lead Award is available for those students taking GCSE PE which covers communication skills, fair play and organizational skills. Sports Leaders will be given the opportunities to demonstrate their skills by leading sessions for children from our feeder schools.
